Fallout 3 Hints
Set A Unique Encounters
#1: You come across a man dying of thirst. You can give him some dirty or purified water in dialogue if you have any, or you can say that you'll be back when you get some. If you give him water, you may encounter him again later, and he'll offer to aid you.
#2: Some settlers are being chased by a deathclaw. Help them kill it, and they'll give you a note that'll get Rock Creek Caverns (Zone 6/10) marked on your world map.
#3: Four settlers are arguing over a fridge that has 10 purified water bottles in it. You can talk to them and pass an average-difficulty Speech Challenge to get them to share, or you can provoke them into fighting each other or ganging up on you.
#4: You come across a badly wounded deathclaw standing near a dead wastelander. Finish off the deathclaw, then search the wastelander's body to find a Deathclaw Gauntlet schematic.
#5: Several settlers are trying to get to a fire hydrant for water, but a big radscorpion is preventing them. Help them kill the scorp so they (and you) can sip from the hydrant.
#6: You encounter a hostile jerk named Laszlo Radford who attacks you with a railway rifle. Kill him and take it for yourself.
#7: You start picking up an intermittent radio signal. Follow it to its source to find a dead Chinese pilot you can loot for items.
#8: An alien ship explodes overhead, and the unique Firelance alien blaster falls to the ground along with several power cells for it. The power cells are widely scattered, and Firelance will be in the approximate center of the circle they form. To make finding them much easier, get Dogmeat and have him search the area for weapons and ammo. (Note that if there's a building nearby, Firelance and/or some of the power cells may land on top of it, making them impossible to reach unless you knock them down with grenades.)
#9: A guy named Mel tries to hold you up with a shotgun. To get rid of him, pass an easy Speech Challenge to get him to back off, pass a very easy Speech Challenge to get him to accept a measly 5 caps, or provoke him into fighting you by saying you haven't killed anyone all day or that you can't give him all your stuff. (You'll get extra options if your Intelligence or Perception attributes are 7 or higher.)
#10: An old scavenger is trying and failing to fix a malfunctioning robot. If your Repair skill is 50 or higher, you can talk the scavenger into giving you some mentats, and you can repair the robot to get a reward of some energy cells (plus 100 caps if you pass an average-difficulty Speech Challenge). If you disable the robot, you can try to pass a hard Speech Challenge to get the same reward.
#11: You meet a scavenger and his pet yao guai, who are on their way to loot what's left of Big Town (Zone 5/10). You can either barter with him or kill him and his pet to get his inventory. (This can only happen if you let the residents of Big Town get killed in the super mutant attack after finishing the misc. quest "Big Trouble in Big Town.")
#12: This is the same as #11, except the scavenger is on his way to sell to the people in Big Town. (This can only happen if you helped the residents of Big Town fight off the super mutant attack after finishing the misc. quest "Big Trouble in Big Town.")
#13: A little kid comes up to you and asks for your autograph. You can either give it to him for free, charge 10 caps for it, or refuse. You also have the option to give your costume to the kid. (This can only happen if you're wearing the AntAgonizer's or Mechanist's costume after finishing the misc. quest "The Superhuman Gambit.")
#14: Three hitmen hired by Mr. Burke attack you. (This can only happen if you disarmed Megaton's bomb on the misc. quest "The Power of the Atom.")
#15: Three angry Megaton refugees attack you. (This can only happen if you blew up Megaton on the misc. quest "The Power of the Atom.")
#16: You find a dead wastelander with three vicious dogs near him, one of which is still alive. Search the wastelander to find a note and a key that have to do with a special treasure box hidden in the Scrapyard (Zone 6/4) that contains three skill books. The note gives an adequate description of where the treasure box is. (You could find it without getting this random encounter, but you'd have to pick a hard lock to get it open.)
#17: Sydney and a friend named Emaline attack you. Be sure to get Sydney's unique SMG after killing her. (This can only happen if you finish the "Stealing Independence" misc. quest without teaming up with Sydney or getting her killed.)
#18: Several raiders are initiating a new member by beating on him with melee weapons. Watch in amusement, then swoop in and finish them all off.
#19: Two guys are trying to disarm a frag mine, but screw up and get blown up.
#20: You find a delirious wasteland merchant who babbles about "the Great One." After he dies, loot him to get a roving trader outfit and hat, plus a note that will get Oasis (Zone 2/4) marked on your world map.
#21: Amata from Vault 101 is being interrogated by an Enclave patrol. You can wait and watch them kill her, or you can try to kill them first so she can escape. (This can only happen after you finish the first two sets of main quests plus the "Trouble on the Homefront" misc. quest by forcing an evacuation of Vault 101.)
