Fallout 3 Hints

Quest Notes

  • 1 of 11: At any time during this quest, or after completing it, you can use the mesmetron to enslave misc. people throughout the wasteland.
  • 2 of 11: There are two main ways to capture misc. slaves for Grouse.
  • 3 of 11: One of them is to use the mesmetron on hostile NPCs, such as raiders and Talon Company mercs. Of course, trying to mez a hostile while under attack by several others can be very dangerous.
  • 4 of 11: The other main way is to try mezzing friendly NPCs in towns. This is also very dangerous due to the fact that the entire town will usually turn hostile to you and stay that way for three days.
  • 5 of 11: The process is further complicated by the fact that the mesmetron doesn't always have the dizzying effect on NPCs that allows you to enslave them. It can randomly turn them hostile or even make their heads explode! If you're mezzing people in a town, always quicksave first so you can quickrestore and try again if necessary.
  • 6 of 11: If you're determined to capture lots of slaves, one good way is to attack small groups of raiders and use the combat tactic of hiding around a corner and immediately going into V.A.T.S. mode when one comes into sight. Try mezzing that one, and rob him and send him on his way with the collar if it works. If the mesmetron has no effect on him, quickly switch to another weapon and kill him, then try mezzing the next raider to come after you.
  • 7 of 11: Another good way is to wait in houses and other small interior buildings in towns and try mezzing someone when he's the only NPC in the building. Don't forget to quicksave first in case you have to quickrestore and try again. After you get the collar on him and send him off, quicksave before exiting the building in case the town turns hostile. If it does, quickrestore and try again. If the town keeps turning hostile, try waiting an hour before exiting.
  • 8 of 11: Note that not all NPCs can be dizzy-ed up and enslaved. Some of them will always turn hostile (or do the head-explode routine) no matter how many times you quickrestore and retry. These are usually people who are involved in some quest or other, or who at least have real names rather than generic ones like "Megaton settler" or "Wastelander."
  • 9 of 11: After you successfully enslave someone, return to Paradise Falls when you can and talk to Grouse to get 250 caps and another slave collar. (Too bad he won't give you several collars at once, huh?)
  • 10 of 11: When you run out of charges for the mesmetron, ask Grouse about it to get the option to buy another 10 charges for 200 caps. (Yet another reason to quicksave before trying to mez someone -- you don't want to waste those expensive charges!)
  • 11 of 11: NOTE: If you have the Point Lookout add-on game, you can do its quests to get a bunch of free mesmetron cells from a secret underground lab.
