Random Encounter Tip
1 of 6: The first time you approach the Super-Duper Mart, you'll get a Set A Random Encounter.
2 of 6: There are two Set A unique encounters that give you rare and valuable items (a deathclaw gauntlet schematic and the unique Firelance weapon), and now's a good time to get one of them.
3 of 6: Move east from Megaton until you reach the big water tower, then go past its fence on the right side.
4 of 6: Move up to the scraggly bush that's next to some rocks, then quicksave. If you get any closer to the store before quicksaving, the random encounter may get set before you want it to.
5 of 6: Move up to the back of the store. If you're holding out for Firelance, you'll know before you reach the store whether or not you got it. (You'll have heard the explosion and seen the smoke trail in the sky above the store.) If you don't get it, quickrestore and try again.
6 of 6: If you're holding out for the schematic, you'll have to go around to the front of the store to see if there's a wounded deathclaw fighting the raiders in the parking lot. If so, quicksave before it sees you, then finish it off, retreating as far as necessary to avoid letting it reach you. (Fortunately, both of its legs start out crippled, so it can't move very fast.) After it's dead, get a deathclaw hand from its body and the schematic from the dead wastelander in the parking lot.
