Gothic 3 Hints

Stealing Tips

  • 1 of 6: When you're trying to grab loose items off a shelf or table, it's best to be holding down the Sneak key while you do it. That'll let you "insta-grab" the items, and someone would have to be looking directly at you in order to see you doing it.
  • 2 of 6: The Sneak key doesn't really help in opening chests, though, so you'll have to make sure no one's looking when you open them.
  • 3 of 6: When you're trying to steal something and someone keeps catching you, it's often possible to attack that person and knock him unconscious without everyone else nearby turning hostile. That way, you can loot the person you knocked out plus steal whatever it was you were trying to steal without him seeing you do it. After the person regains consciousness, he won't usually be mad at you or refuse you skill training or trader services. (Though he would if he saw you steal something.)
  • 4 of 6: Another thing you could do is cast the Sleep spell (see the Transformation Spells list) on someone so they won't see you steal stuff. Watch out that they don't wake up before you're done taking things, though.
  • 5 of 6: Unfortunately, even if no one sees you stealing items, word will soon get around that valuable items have gone missing. The next time you come near a guard, he'll confront you about it. You'll sometimes get away with it automatically, but usually you'll have to try to bribe the guard or make excuses. (The thieving skill called "Make Excuses" can help with that, but not much.) If your bribe or excuse doesn't work, the guard will turn hostile.
  • 6 of 6: When you steal something and know that the next guard that you come near will confront you about it, use the town teleporter stone to teleport to the town gates and let one of the guards there accuse you. If making an excuse doesn't work with him, lead him away from town when he turns hostile so you can knock him out without anyone else seeing you do it. Don't kill him, but loot him and then let him regain consciousness and return to his post. That'll take care of the "theft penalty" until you steal something else.
