Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints

Zombine Combat Tips

  • 1 of 19: The first zombine you come across is already dead.
  • 2 of 19: After Alyx coins the term "zombine" and approaches the nearby glass barrier, another one beyond the barrier will stagger over with a live grenade!
  • 3 of 19: Since the barrier prevents it from getting to you, all you have to do is back up to a safe distance until the grenade goes off, killing the zombine and destroying the barrier.
  • 4 of 19: Go through and collect supplies, then take the side doorway to enter a very large, dark tunnel in which there are several more zombines who'll "wake up" and attack as you approach them.
  • 5 of 19: NOTE: These things aren't as fast as the fast zombies in the main game, but they can run fairly fast, and they like to pull out grenades and charge you with them in a kind of kamikaze attack. (When they do, you can pull the grenades in with the gravity gun and throw them away.)
  • 6 of 19: If you look into the dark tunnel from the doorway, you can see an explosive barrel a little ways ahead and to the right. Also, there's a cement block on the ground a bit nearer.
  • 7 of 19: The first thing to do is pull in the cement block with the gravity gun and drop it a ways back in the hallway for later use.
  • 8 of 19: Also, it would help a lot if you'd go back through previous areas in search of items you could use as gravity gun ammo and stockpile them with your cement block. Just the two cement chunks near the tanker truck would be very useful.
  • 9 of 19: It would *really* help to go back and get any hoppers you left behind in that tunnel near the train wreck. You could drop them just inside the dark tunnel and then throw them at the zombines right after you use the explosive barrels.
  • 10 of 19: After quicksaving, run into the dark tunnel and grab the nearest explosive barrel, then turn left and fire it at the group of zombines that are just to the right of the car that's over there.
  • 11 of 19: Immediately run around to the left of that car and hit it with a couple of quick gravity gun bursts to push it into the zombines.
  • 12 of 19: Then run get the second explosive barrel (a ways behind the first, over in the right half of the tunnel) and quickly retreat toward the doorway, throwing the barrel at the nearest zombine that you see.
  • 13 of 19: If you brought any hoppers with you, run get them and use them now (or just leave them to defend the doorway).
  • 14 of 19: Then run back through the doorway and turn left, going down the well-lit hall to where you stockpiled gravity gun ammo. Alyx should follow you. If she doesn't, it's because she's under attack, so go help her out quickly.
  • 15 of 19: WARNING: Alyx can die if she takes too much damage, and this is the first place in the game where that's very likely to happen if you're not careful.
  • 16 of 19: If you and she make it down the hall, get your cement junk ready to head-bash zombines with as they approach you in single file.
  • 17 of 19: When they stop coming in after you, go out and see if there are any stragglers to finish off.
  • 18 of 19: After that large group is dead, there'll only be at most a couple more a ways down the tunnel (on its left side, near another power-lock door). If they're not there, then they must have joined in on the main combat.
  • 19 of 19: If they are back there, you can use the gas canister and cement blocks that are near the power-lock door (or the nearby explosive barrel), or you can shine your flashlight on them and help Alyx shoot them.
