Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints
Standard Strategy
1 of 11: Right after you drop down, grab one of the three nearby explosive barrels and move to where you can throw it at the antlion guard as it charges the APC that's shooting at it.
2 of 11: Then run quickly past it and on down the street to the right to get to where the two antlion-spawning holes are.
3 of 11: It's hard, but you need to quickly plug both holes using the nearby cars before the antlion guard gets done with the APC and comes after you.
4 of 11: If you have time before he shows up, quickly shoot the remaining regular antlions to death.
5 of 11: Then run back to your big supply dump at the drop-down point so your health and armor will be restored.
6 of 11: Then see if you can find any more explosive barrels to hurl at the antlion guard, but make sure he's not too close when you do or you'll get badly damaged, too.
7 of 11: Do you remember how the standard strategy for defeating the first antlion guard in the main game involved strafing around a central rock while a nearby resistance gunner shot the thing to death?
8 of 11: This time you can strafe around the mounted gun emplacement in the center of the area while Alyx shoots at the antlion guard from her safe perch.
9 of 11: To make sure you don't keep running out of auxiliary power, only use it to quickly dodge out of the way when the antlion guard is about to head-butt you. The rest of the time, keep moving without using auxiliary power.
10 of 11: It's still fairly hard to keep dodging the guard's charges and head-butts long enough for Alyx to finish him, so hopefully you start this maneuver off at full health and armor, and are able to do some shooting of your own.
11 of 11: Or you could switch to the Run for the Corner Strategy at this point to make the rest of the combat much easier.
