Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints

Moving Back Up Strategy

  • 1 of 20: First of all, only throw health and armor items down to the pavement below. Stockpile all weapons and ammo in the little niche area that's a short ways back from the drop-off.
  • 2 of 20: You might also want to stockpile up radiator grilles, cement blocks, and other good projectiles for throwing at the antlion guard to help save a bit on ammo. Nothing too big, though, or it'll be hard to throw through the narrow doorway.
  • 3 of 20: Once that's done, it's time to create your way back up for after you drop down.
  • 4 of 20: You see that large rectangular-shaped wooden crate down there?
  • 5 of 20: Pull it in with the gravity gun and drop it gently so that it lands on the pavement almost directly below the drop-off point.
  • 6 of 20: Make sure it's lying flat, like it was to begin with, instead of standing on one end. Also make sure it's flat on the concrete, and that none of your tossed-down supplies are underneath it.
  • 7 of 20: Now all you need is one more item to set on top of that crate so you can drop onto that item and then jump right back up again.
  • 8 of 20: The ideal thing to use is a square wooden crate. There are a couple of those in the room at the bottom of the stairs near the end of the previous chapter section, but you can't get back there now due to the fact that the door you used to get into the supply/ambush room is now closed and locked (unless you blocked it open).
  • 9 of 20: If you didn't bring a wooden crate to use, you'll have to make do with the things you can pull in from down below, such as supply crates and barrels.
  • 10 of 20: Both are kind of tricky to use, so set them up carefully.
  • 11 of 20: NOTE: If you're going to use a barrel, it's dangerous to use an explosive one, so look out one of the windows to see a couple of regular ones that you can pull in through a window. (Also, if any explosive barrels are within gravity gun range, pull them in and then throw them away for safety's sake.)
  • 12 of 20: When you're ready, save your game and drop carefully onto your top item, then turn and jump right back up. This should be fairly easy to do, but you may need to restore and retry a couple of times.
  • 13 of 20: Once you're back up, move away from the edge and wait for the antlion guard to appear below. (He probably won't until Alyx steps outside long enough for him to see her.)
  • 14 of 20: When you can get him to show up, you'll have two problems to deal with: the antlion guard has a *lot* of hit points (more on higher difficulties), and Alyx will be constantly swarmed by regular antlions and may die.
  • 15 of 20: You need to help Alyx out by shooting antlions when she's got several on her at once, and shoot the antlion guard with the shotgun, pulse rifle, and/or SMG all the rest of the time. (Or toss non-explosive gravity gun projectiles at him if you have any.)
  • 16 of 20: Another thing you can do when he's nearby is gently lob frag grenades down there with the secondary fire key.
  • 17 of 20: If the antlion guard gets "stuck" directly underneath you to where you can't shoot him, just focus on the regular antlions so Alyx will have plenty of time to shoot him for you.
  • 18 of 20: Run back to your ammo stock whenever one of your guns is empty, and try to stay away from the very edge of the drop-off. It's hard for the antlion guard to head-butt you up there, but he can do it if you're too close to the edge.
  • 19 of 20: When the antlion guard dies, quickly run back to your ammo stash and pick up anything else you need, then quicksave your game before dropping down.
  • 20 of 20: Alyx will also drop down, so help her fight off antlions until she can make it over to the mounted machine gun in the center of the area. That way, she can help shoot antlions with it while you run plug their spawn-holes with nearby cars.
