What's the best way to handle this trap?

  • 1 of 14: First off, note that you can move around most of the room and find two unset hoppers and several supplies (including supply crates you can pull down with the gravity gun) without springing the trap.
  • 2 of 14: When you go anywhere near the open doorway on the other side of the room, the Combine will slam both doors down and seal them.
  • 3 of 14: Before that happens, you might want to bring supplies and leftover hoppers (if you've done the second generator already) from other areas and drop them in here.
  • 4 of 14: When you're ready, get the Combine to spring their trap, then pull out your shotgun and station yourself at the large wall hole just to the left of the doorway that you approached to spring the trap.
  • 5 of 14: TIP: You could jam those doors open when the trap is sprung to make shooting and grenading the soldiers a bit easier.
  • 6 of 14: A lot of soldiers are going to be running from left to right past your hole, so double-barrel them (or crossbow them, or whatever) as they go by.
  • 7 of 14: After several soldiers get past you, toss a frag grenade through the hole so that it bounces over to the right, where the soldiers are clustering. This can be hard due to all the bars in the hole (so quicksave first), but doing it right will get some of those soldiers back in range of your guns. (If you jammed the doors open earlier, it's much easier to just toss a grenade through them.)
  • 8 of 14: Eventually, the soldiers will get sick of that and will start cutting through the doors you were going for when the trap sprung. (This will happen even if you jammed those doors open.)
  • 9 of 14: Quickly toss a couple more frag grenades at them through the wall hole (or jammed-open doors), then run over to the spot where the two unset hoppers are setting.
  • 10 of 14: Pick up one hopper and get ready to throw it at the doorway right after it's cut open and falls.
  • 11 of 14: Quickly grab and toss the second hopper to kill any soldiers that the first hopper missed.
  • 12 of 14: If you killed several soldiers through the wall hole earlier, those two hoppers should finish off the rest. Otherwise, run for cover and start shooting.
  • 13 of 14: Soon after the first door falls, more soldiers will start cutting through the second one.
  • 14 of 14: When it falls, quickly shoot down the two soldiers who run in (or throw a hopper at them if you have one left), and you'll be done here.
