Half-Life 2 Hints

Section 5: Hunter-Chopper Dodging Part 2 (d1_canals_10)

  • 1 of 17: Head forward and then to the right at the split. (The left path dead-ends real quick.)
  • 2 of 17: As soon as you turn right, move to the left side so that you can use the two logs that are set up like a ramp.
  • 3 of 17: TIP: If you stay up on the left-side ledge that the log ramp gets you onto, you can get a supply crate near the end of the ledge. However, I always got hit by more mines doing it that way.
  • 4 of 17: When you pass through an open gate (or fall off the above-mentioned ledge) into a large open area, turn right. (You could first go left for another supply crate, but I wouldn't recommend it.)
  • 5 of 17: When you come to a short solid wall, head up onto the left bank so you can get around the wall and into the tunnel behind it.
  • 6 of 17: You'll soon emerge into a narrow channel with high ledges on each side. Here, you can boat along one of the slanty walls to help you avoid mines.
  • 7 of 17: TIP: There's also a large niche halfway down the left side's ledge that has a couple of supply crates in the back. As with most of these things, it isn't worth the pain to go get them.
  • 8 of 17: TIP: However, there is one supply area that's worth going for. After you leave the narrow channel and turn left, you'll be heading toward a couple of bridges with barnacles hanging on their undersides. Before you go that way, turn left and zoom into the rightmost of two dark openings. There's some loose health and armor on the floor in one spot, plus two frag grenades in one corner. Also, you can safely stop the boat and take a breather (and quicksave).
  • 9 of 17: Once you're past the barnacle bridges, you can turn left and hunt for some hard-to-find .357 ammo in the back right corner, but I'd advise you to instead turn right past the barnacle bridges and head under the right side of the next bridge.
  • 10 of 17: Keep right as you approach a large curving ramp that you need to take at full speed so that you can land on a large landing next to a building.
  • 11 of 17: Duck into the building for cover and supplies. (Though note that the stupid thing has lots of windows in the roof for the chopper to shoot through.)
  • 12 of 17: When you're done in there, head back out in the airboat and drop off of the building's landing into the radioactive sludge below. (Or use the large lift inside the building to lower the airboat.)
  • 13 of 17: Drive through the two open gates ahead, then turn left.
  • 14 of 17: As you speed along, a huge smokestack will slowly fall across your path.
  • 15 of 17: Hug the right wall that runs along there to avoid being hit or blocked by any of the smokestack pieces.
  • 16 of 17: After that, it's a simple straight run into a huge concrete tunnel (though you will need to dodge a few APC rockets).
  • 17 of 17: After you round the corner in the tunnel, you'll be safe from the chopper again and will enter Section 6: The Gauss Cannon.
