Half-Life 2 Hints

Get Wet Strategy

  • 1 of 9: This strategy takes advantage of the fact that even fairly shallow water can kill antlions very quickly.
  • 2 of 9: When you approach the large broken bridge, drive under the approximate center of it and plow into the large pond of water ahead.
  • 3 of 9: Sure, the jeep will stall and you'll have to proceed on foot, but you'll be safe from the antlions while in the water. Some may try to jump at you, but any of them that enter the water where it isn't extremely shallow will thrash around and die.
  • 4 of 9: Also, no new antlions will spawn if you restrict your movements to the pond. (And if you stay well away from its right bank for a ways past the bridge -- that area's super-sensitive for some reason.)
  • 5 of 9: It's a fairly large pond, and you can run along it to get to where three Combine soldiers will appear ahead -- two on the sand and one on the wooden platforms near the thumper.
  • 6 of 9: Once the two soldiers on the sand reach the safety of the wooden platforms, you can easily pistol-shoot all three of them to death one at a time. (Remember to do this from a great enough distance that they can't return fire.)
  • 7 of 9: ALTERNATIVE: Run for the large cluster of rocks that's about halfway along the pond's left side and find the little niche area that the rocks form. Go out on the sand far enough to provoke another wave of antlions into spawning, then retreat into the rocks' niche and use the gravity gun to repel any antlions that come after you. Most of them should go after the soldiers, who will be stupid enough to run back down on the sand to fight them.
  • 8 of 9: After those three soldiers are dead, you can return to the jeep, get it out of the water, and drive over to the thumper to activate it.
  • 9 of 9: Or you can instead use another one of my alternative strategies to turn the thumper on while still on foot.
