Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper Hints

How do I sort out the ledgers inside the safe?

  • 1 of 17: You'll need a handy reference work to help with that.
  • 2 of 17: Look on the desk to find a big book.
  • 3 of 17: Take it to learn that it's a Yiddish/English dictionary.
  • 4 of 17: Select that in inventory and click on the open safe to bring up a puzzle screen on which you'll need to translate the ledgers' labels into English letters.
  • 5 of 17: The current labels are Hebrew symbols, and if you look down at the bottom of the screen, you'll see a system of assigning numbers to Hebrew symbols.
  • 6 of 17: What you need to do is make the connection from Hebrew symbols to English letters by figuring out how the numbers match up with them.
  • 7 of 17: That's where the documents tacked to the left of the ledger display come in. Look them over for clues.
  • 8 of 17: Start with the bottom one. Look at how the names Bath and Hammer are translated into numbers.
  • 9 of 17: It seems that B is 2, A is 1, and TH is 400. That info alone will help you figure out two of the ledger labels.
  • 10 of 17: Look at the list of Hebrew-to-number correspondences and see which symbols go with the numbers 1, 2, and 400, then see if those symbols are on any of the ledgers. If so, you'll know what English letter to label those ledgers with.
  • 11 of 17: Let's start with B=2. The Hebrew symbol for 2 is on the second-from-left ledger, so it must be the B ledger. Click on the letter B in the English alphabet list, then click on the blank spot above the Hebrew symbol on the second-from-left ledger.
  • 12 of 17: Notice that the small arrow under the B lights up green, meaning you got it right.
  • 13 of 17: Now for A=1. The Hebrew symbol for 1 is on the leftmost folder, so put an A in its blank. Another correct choice!
  • 14 of 17: The Hebrew symbol for 400 isn't on any of the ledgers, so it isn't useful. Go on to the name Hammer and its translation to help you label more ledgers.
  • 15 of 17: You'll find that the third-from-left ledger is H, the third-from-right ledger is M, and the rightmost ledger is R. That gives you ABH??M?R.
  • 16 of 17: You could just guess the rest without too much trouble, but you can figure them out if you'd rather.
  • 17 of 17: Once you get it all done, the ledgers will be labeled ABHULMER.
