Icewind Dale II Hints
Combat Tips
1 of 6: Take advantage of the fact that you can pause the game (SPACEBAR) at any time. When the game is paused during combat, you can select one character at a time and have them each do a separate action (attack a particular enemy, retreat for healing, cast a spell, use a quick item, etc.).
2 of 6: Another thing to check out is the "autopause" list that's accessible via the main menu's "Options / Game Play." You can have the game automatically pause at the end of a round of combat, when a character dies, and in many other cases. (The default is no autopauses.)
3 of 6: One strategy that's useful in many parts of the game is the old "bottleneck" strategy. Whenever you can lead a large, spread-out group of enemies down a narrow corridor so that only one or two of them can melee attack your characters at once, that's usually the best option. (This may not be true if there are several enemy spellcasters who have area-effect spells like Fireball ready to cast. Spreading out within a large area may help more in that case.)
4 of 6: Whenever you can have two of your characters flank a single enemy, this gives both of your characters a +2 to hit, and a rogue character can use his sneak-attack ability.
5 of 6: When you lose a battle, analyze why as carefully as you can. Doing so may suggest some strategies to try next time. For instance, if most of your HP loss was due to fire-based attacks, be sure to make everyone as resistant to fire as possible before trying again. Also, try using spells and potions that temporarily enhance attributes; they can often make the difference between winning and losing.
6 of 6: As a last resort, go under the "Options / Game Play" menu on the game's main menu and lower the difficulty. (Or, as a *really* last resort, use the Cheat Codes. It's better than never being able to finish the game.)
