How do I correctly place the gears?

  • 1 of 8: You'll notice that most of the squares has one or more half-gears.  The goal is to arrange the squares in such a way that each of the half-gears is made complete with a half-gear from another square.  For example, if one square has a large half-gear along the bottom edge, you will need to place it just over a square with a large half-gear along the top edge.
  • 2 of 8: There is one half-gear extending out from the bottom that cannot be moved.  With the exception of this one spot, none of  the half-gears can be placed against the outside edge of the puzzle.
  • 3 of 8: All the other gears must connect and interconnect to the half-gear at the bottom.  For example, there are two pieces that have a small half-gear along the bottom edge of the square and nothing else.  These could not be placed against the immovable half-gear since that would create only one single working gear with nothing else attached to it.
  • 4 of 8: All the rest of the pieces must somehow fit together so that all the gears are interconnected and complete.  The puzzle won't be solved if there are any left-over gears or gear-pieces.
  • 5 of 8: Start with the gear at the bottom that cannot be moved.  It has a half-small gear at the top.  There are several squares that have a small half-gear at the bottom.  You'll need to decide which square works best in that location.
  • 6 of 8: Through a process of elimination, you should be able to figure out which square to place at the start.  For example, there is a square with three small half-gears -- bottom, left, and top.  This piece cannot be placed against the starting half-gear because the left half-gear cannot be completed with the other squares without placing a half-gear against the edge of the puzzle (which is against the rules).
  • 7 of 8: There is another piece that has a small half-gear at the bottom, and a large half-gear on the right side.  This one also cannot be placed at the bottom since there are only two choices to complete the large half-gear and neither one fits the rules of the puzzle.  One has nothing else on it -- which cannot be correct since this would end the chain of gears.  The other has a large gear extending down from the bottom (which cannot be placed along the edge of the puzzle).
  • 8 of 8: Continue through the rest of the gears, placing the squares, one-by-one, through a process of elimination, until all the gears are placed.  Note: Correctly placing the gears is the first step in starting the main water pump.  Be sure to read on under "How do I restart the main water pump in the academy?" for the final steps.
