LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy Hints
How do I fly X-Wings and other vehicles?
Vehicles largely work the same way that people do -- you use the same keys or gamepad sticks to move around and shoot.
There are a couple of major differences, and these may take you a little while to get used to when you're flying for the first time. The first is that most ships don't stop quite as quickly when you stop moving forward, and they don't turn as easily. You may first want to try going a bit slower than normal, especially with a gamepad, so that you can adjust to the difference. Otherwise, you'll probably find yourself running into things -- and losing health as a result.
The other major difference is that ships can do barrel rolls and loops. To execute these tricks, you need to press the "jump" button. Pressing the jump button while you're moving forward normally will cause you to do a basic barrel roll. This gives you a good chance to switch places with an enemy ship that's behind you, and also to take another pass at picking up studs or shooting at stationary targets you may have accidentally missed. Once the loop is done, you'll still be heading in your original direction.
Pressing the stick/keys to move sideways and "jumping" at the same time causes a roll that looks neat and may help you dodge incoming fire -- but I generally found the loops far more useful. You can also flip relatively quickly just by reversing direction on your gamepad or keyboard, but you don't need to "jump" to do this.
Several of the vehicles in specific levels do have extra abilities, but these are covered in the appropriate hints for those levels.
