LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy Hints
What's the difference between Story and Free Play modes?
1 of 4: Story mode is the basic version of the chapter/level, where you have to play using specific characters, and you have to play all of the chapters in each episode in the given order. Once you've completed Story mode for any chapter, you'll then unlock its corresponding Free Play mode. There's no requirement that you take the Free Play episodes in any particular order, once they're unlocked.
2 of 4: The game will ask you to pick two characters before starting Free Play mode. You can choose from any of the characters that you've already unlocked, but the game also automatically gives you additional characters beyond your two choices, so that you have all the different abilities available to you. For example, even if you pick Han Solo and Leia, you'll still be able to toggle over to R2-D2 and C-3P0 once the chapter starts.
You'll usually automatically get at least one Jedi, one Dark Force character, one bounty hunter, and a small character who can crawl through access hatches -- assuming you've already unlocked at least one character of that type. In other words, Darth Vader is generally given to you automatically once you've unlocked him, but only after you've unlocked him. Since these additional characters are assigned automatically, unless there's a particular character that you really like, don't spend too much time trying to figure out which two you pick.
3 of 4: Once you're in Free Play mode, you can toggle between any of these characters using the keys described in your manual. (With an Xbox controller, you would use the shoulder triggers to do this.) In Story mode, you were limited to switching between the characters you could see on-screen, but in Free Play, you can transform any of your characters into any of the toggles available, right where you're standing.
4 of 4: You can play through a chapter with any selection of characters in Free Play mode to get additional studs, plus an additional gold brick if you reach True Jedi status. Depending on the chapter, the Power Brick that unlocks extras may be available to you even with limited numbers of characters. However, one of the benefits for completing a chapter in Free Play is to get all 10 of its minikit canisters. If that is your goal, you may want to read these hints about the minikits -- as you generally won't be able to get all of the canisters until you've unlocked most of the character types, including at least one Dark Force character, like Vader or The Emperor.
