Mysterious Journey II Hints

What do I do with the "artichoke" apparatus?

  • 1 of 13: Have you pressed the buttons to see what they do?
  • 2 of 13: The small green buttons (slightly above the larger red, blue, yellow, and green buttons) move the apparatus to the left and right.
  • 3 of 13: The other colored buttons shoot out balls of color at one of the green stalks in the water.  Each of the balls of color affects the plant in a slightly different way.  Make note of what each of the balls of color does to the plant.
  • 4 of 13: The yellow, blue, and green buttons make the plant grow, by varying amounts.  The red button is like a reset, removing all growth from the selected stalk.
  • 5 of 13: For a clue to the nature of this puzzle, it is helpful to keep pushing buttons to quickly grow the plants to their maximum height, then walk around the nearby area and see if you can figure out a possible use for the stalks.
  • 6 of 13: At maximum height, the plants are roughly level with the nearby leaf-like outcropping.
  • 7 of 13: Under the correct conditions, the row of plants could be used as a bridge.
  • 8 of 13: Your goal is to grow all the plants to the maximum height, but you need to make sure there's a leaf at the very top of each stalk -- as the leaves are what will form the bridge.  (Easier said than done!)
  • 9 of 13: Now that you know what to do, you'll need to figure out how.  The amount that the plants grow will vary (as described in the hints below).  Experiment with each colored button, pressing each one repeatedly.  Note how much each colored button makes the plant grow.  Also note what level leaves grow out from the stalk.
  • 10 of 13: In order to simplify things, work on only one plant at a time.  The easiest one seems to be the plant on the far left (press the small green button on the left to turn the apparatus in that direction).
  • 11 of 13: Make note of the maximum height of the plant.  The final bump of growth is the level at which you will be trying to make a leaf grow.
  • 12 of 13: Remember, the colors produce a range of growth.  For example, pressing the green button will sometimes create only two bumps, sometimes it will create three, and sometimes four.
  • 13 of 13: To make the puzzle more challenging, each of the stalks tends to show a preference for growing to a specific height.  While the colors sometimes produce a random amount of growth (within their ranges), the growth will always (not just randomly) stop on any of these "hurdles" whenever the range for a particular color allows it.  The hurdles are at a particular height for each stalk, and once the stalk has grown to that exact height, it will be not be possible to grow it to the maximum height with leaves at the top.  Experiment with the different stalks to figure out what the specific problem height is, then work out a way to get past that hurdle.
