Where can I learn spells?
1 of 9: There are two ways you can find spells. Spell scrolls will give you a single casting of a spell -- and you don't have to have the necessary skill -- but they do not let you learn spells.
2 of 9: To learn a spell permanently, you will want to find a spell book ("Book of Learning") that contains the spell. Drag and right-click it onto a character's portrait to have him/her learn the spell. Of course, you must have the necessary skill.
3 of 9: You may occasionally find spell books as treasures in dungeons, but if you need a particular spell right away, I wouldn't count on finding these.
4 of 9: Spell books are available for purchase at the appropriate guilds. The general "Guild of the Elements" and "Guild of the Self" sell a wider variety of spells than the dedicated guilds ("Guild of Fire," etc.), but that also means they're less likely to have the spells that you want in stock. They also don't have quite the variety of spells as the more specialized guilds.
5 of 9: There are also two kinds of guilds. Initiate Guilds will only give you the first few spells in each skill, but they sell those spells more cheaply than the Adept Guilds. Each Initiate Guild is paired with an Adept Guild, and membership to one allows you to access the other.
6 of 9: You can recognize the guild houses by the signs outside the buildings. Each sign either has a picture of a body or a wavy-line elemental symbol.
7 of 9: The last two spells in the Light and Dark paths -- Divine Intervention and Dark Containment -- are only available by solving a special quest.
8 of 9: Personally, I found these spells pretty useless. Divine Intervention is too limited in its use, and Dark Containment is too expensive, for either to be very useful. But the quest to find these two spells also comes with a number of other bonuses, including 250,000 GP and a few artifacts to increase spellcasting ability.
