What types of characters should I create for my party?
  • 1 of 7: First, carefully read pages 20-22 and 29-49 of the player manual. That will answer a lot of questions.
  • 2 of 7: I'd advise you to take the manual's advice of making two of your characters fighters and two of them initiates. You should only break this rule if you've already played all the way through MM9 and want to try it again in a challenging new way (like with all four characters being of the same type).
  • 3 of 7: And do pay attention to what races you use for your fighters and what races you use for your magic-users. For example, dwarves are better suited to fighting than magic-using due to their penalty with the Magic stat and their bonus with the Endurance stat.
  • 4 of 7: Dwarves are probably the best to choose for fighters because of their Endurance bonus. So make a dwarf fighter, floor his Magic stat, and crank up his Endurance all the way to 25. (You could then make your second fighter a half-orc, whose big strength is the Might stat, but don't forget the big Speed weakness that half-orcs have.)
  • 5 of 7: As for initiates, no class but dwarf has a Magic penalty, and no class at all gets a Magic bonus. Half-orcs aren't all that bad as mages, but I would prefer humans due to their lack of penalties. Elves have an Endurance penalty but are otherwise a good choice, too.
  • 6 of 7: So I'd go with two dwarf fighters (or one dwarf and one half-orc) and two human initiates (or maybe one human and one elf), planning on making both the fighters into assassins, one of the initiates into a lich, and the other initiate into a priest.
  • 7 of 7: Whatever you decide to do, remember your plans when choosing which skills to give each character. Also, print out all the relevant Useful Checklists to use while playing.
