This horrid Dragon King is untouchable! How do I kill it?
- 1 of 14: Not easily, quickly, or early in the game.
- 2 of 14: Before you even think about trying it, make sure all of your characters are level 50 at least (preferably 60 or 70).
- 3 of 14: The most important thing to do is have everyone ready at least one weapon that can stun or paralyze enemies (weapons that are "of Brawlers," "of Stoning," or "of Fear"). If a character can ready two weapons at once, make one of them a stunning weapon and the other a powerful artifact weapon.
- 4 of 14: Vampiric weapons are also very good ones to have readied. Your fighters shouldn't be without them during the final stages of the game (including this one).
- 5 of 14: After casting some useful spells (Bless, Faith, Haste, Pain Reflection, Regeneration, etc.), save your game and approach the Dragon King. If you have enough stunning weapons and high weapon skills, you should be able to keep the dragon stunned and immobile most of the time.
- 6 of 14: Take advantage of the dragon's stunned periods to not only attack it, but also to cast healing spells (including Divine Intervention, which can be cast as many times as you like despite its stated one-a-day limit) and to refresh your protective spells.
- 7 of 14: Another important factor is that the dragon constantly regenerates hit points at a very high rate, so you'll have to be able to damage him at a higher rate in order to ever get his hit points all the way down from 39,000 to 0.
- 8 of 14: One great way to keep damaging him is to have everyone who can cast Poison Cloud ready it as their quick spell (and have other guys ready Wands of Poison Cloud), and then stand right in front of the dragon and lean on the spell/range attack key. Your fighters will attack with their great weapons and skills (or Poison Cloud wands) and your magic-users will cast Poison Cloud after Poison Cloud (make sure their Meditation skill is way high so they'll have lots of spell points).
- 9 of 14: Another terrific thing to do is to have an Elemental Magic GM cast the Elemental Aura spell on everyone just before going in, and again whenever it wears off. It'll offer a lot of protection and do the dragon a bit of damage, too.
- 10 of 14: Also, if you used my tips on making Thjorad a usable weapon, have your best Cudgel skill person ready it. It will occasionally hit the dragon for several thousand hit points in one blow (sometimes as many as 20 or 30 thousand).
- 11 of 14: Other things to note are that the Paralyze spell works on the dragon, and that you can hit F5 to quicksave your game if your danger indicator ever turns yellow (which it often does when the dragon is distracted by Winged Mutants).
- 12 of 14: If your characters are very powerful and make full use of all the above advice, you should be able to eventually knock the dragon over. When you do, you'll get a red treasure bag of money plus a scroll in your inventory called the "Super Guber Award."
- 13 of 14: That's not much of a reward, and the Dragon King does regenerate every time you exit and reenter his lair, so after you kill him, be sure to take a screenshot of his toppled-over body to remember him by. (Get the view you want, then press F8. That'll create a Windows BMP file in the main MM9 install directory with your screenshot.) I have my pic in case anyone wants proof that I slew the beast.
- 14 of 14: Thanks to all of you who wrote in with tips on killing the dragon. The reason I said he was unkillable in the first release of this hint file is that I was rushing to get the file out and available to you ASAP, so I missed a few things, including this. I've put in every tip I was given prior to this release, so you should see yours up there somewhere.
