How can I equip items with constant negative effects on them?
  • 1 of 9: You mean, without suffering from the bad effects, right? It's really quite simple.
  • 2 of 9: One way is to go to a spellmaker and custom-make a spell that will make you 100% resistant to whatever bad effects are on the item for 1 second.
  • 3 of 9: Most bad constant effects can be repelled by having a 100% Resist Magicka, so create a spell that gives you that effect for 1 second when cast. That's not a very long duration, but it can be made to work. Increasing the duration would very quickly make the spell much more expensive to create and much harder to cast successfully.
  • 4 of 9: When you're ready to equip a constant negative-effect item (like the Boots of Blinding Speed, for instance), cast your new spell and then quickly right-click to pause the game and bring up your inventory screen before your one second of 100% resistance is up. You'll have to right-click at just the right point between the effect appearing on your effects list and disappearing one second later. (Note that you can't even wait until your character's hands finish waving through the air, or it'll be too late.)
  • 5 of 9: Once your inventory is up, you can verify that the 100% Resist Magicka effect is on you by pointing the mouse cursor at the effects list at the bottom right of the screen. If it's there, you can now ready the Boots of Blinding Speed (or whatever) and then right-click to unpause the game. You should gain all the good effects of the item and none of the bad ones. (Though note that some items may have negative effects that Resist Magicka doesn't protect against.)
  • 6 of 9: Your Mysticism skill has to be very high to have much of a chance of casting those kinds of spells correctly, so you may prefer to enchant an item with a "Cast When Used" effect. If you enchant an exquisite ring or amulet and use a good soul gem, you can make it cast 100% Resist Magicka for up to 12 seconds. This is a good alternative to the 100% Resist Magicka spell since your Mysticism skill level doesn't matter. See my Enchanting Tips for more info on enchanting items.
  • 7 of 9: Another alternative you may want to try is to wear items with a constant Resist Magicka effect on them. They're not easy to come by, though.
  • 8 of 9: Fortunately, after the item with the negative constant effect is successfully equipped, it won't constantly check your Resist Magicka rating. You'll only need to get your resistance back up if you have to re-equip the negative-effect item later on. For example, the Boots of Blinding Speed count as armor and have a very low condition rating, so it's far too easy for a tough monster to knock the boots right off of you by damaging them while attacking you. After repairing them, you'll have to get your magicka resistance back up to 100% for a second or two so you can put the boots back on without being blinded.
  • 9 of 9: NOTE: With attribute- and skill-draining weapons like Fury and Greed, you can just ready the weapon and then pay an Imperial Cult shrine for a Restore Attributes blessing.
