The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Hints

Can I get away with killing the people in towns or looting their houses?

  • 1 of 8: Of course. This wondrously flexible game provides for banditry and murder, too.
  • 2 of 8: If a person you want to kill is wandering around outside, you'll have to attack him when there's no one else looking. Wait until he wanders off to an obscure side area, or something. (You could try taunting him into attacking you, but this is often difficult to do, especially if your Speechcraft skill is low. See the Misc. Tips for some detailed taunting advice.)
  • 3 of 8: As for people in houses, you can usually kill them and loot their house without getting in trouble with the guards. Furthermore, the house is yours from then on, and you can use it to store items and rest.
  • 4 of 8: If you want to steal from an area without attacking anyone, you can do so (even if not a skilled thief) by making sure there's something (wall, post, floor, door, etc.) between you and anyone in the vicinity. Also, there are many houses and shops with deserted rooms that you can loot at will.
  • 5 of 8: You can enter and loot houses that are locked, too. The only catch is that you mustn't let anyone see you trying to pick the lock. Some doors are in areas that aren't frequently traveled by the outdoor townsfolk, and some aren't. Press and hold the Sneak key (see page 41 in the manual) before attempting to unlock a door with a lockpick or a spell.
  • 6 of 8: If you really want to unlock a door but can't ever manage it without someone alerting the guards, then you can still do it. Put any and all stolen goods in containers in a house that you've already made your own, then go pick the lock you want to pick. When the guards nab you, just pay the fine. The door will still be unlocked, and you won't get in trouble for entering it.
  • 7 of 8: While doing all of this good, fun stuff, keep in mind that you don't want to end up killing or angering someone that's part of a quest before you do the quest. If you're not sure whether a person is quest-related, then try using the UHS Reader's "Find in File..." option under the "File" menu to search for the person's name. If it's not found, then the person is probably not quest-related.
  • 8 of 8: If you ever do find yourself in the situation of being stuck because a quest-related person is dead, you may be able to get him back by using the console's "placeatpc" command.
