The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Hints
How can I avoid killing essential quest people and losing unique quest items?
1 of 5: One simple way is to not kill anyone who doesn't attack you first and always store unusual items that you don't want to carry around in one or two certain places where you can easily find them again.
2 of 5: To find out whether a person or item is related to a quest, you could use the UHS Reader's "Find in File..." feature under the "File" menu to search for the person or item's name. If it's not found anywhere in the file, it probably has nothing to do with any quest.
3 of 5: Many people have written in with problems dealing with not being able to finish a quest because they unknowingly killed some essential person or creature long ago while just exploring around and having fun. One thing I've done to help prevent this is to add info to the annotated map keys for each region saying whether a map item is part of a quest. That way, you can check out the map key for a region before exploring a cave or something in it to make sure you don't mess up anything related to a quest you might want to do later on in the game.
4 of 5: Another thing I've done is to add the "Rare and Unique Quest Items" list. Any time you have some uncommon item that you want to get rid of, check the list to see if the item is needed for a quest. If it is, you'll want to store it or sell it somewhere and then remember where it is for when you need it later.
5 of 5: If you've already killed off some essential NPC or lost an essential item, you may be able to use the "placeatpc" console command to get it back.
