Myst III: Exile Hints

How can I open it?

  • 1 of 14: Start by looking at the second plant -- the one that you can stand in front of at ground level.
  • 2 of 14: Notice that this second plant is open, unlike the first one.
  • 3 of 14: Try to close this plant, to learn how you can open the first one.
  • 4 of 14: Take the path that goes up and around the second plant, and you'll reach a plant that has fan-like leaves.
  • 5 of 14: Click on the center of that plant to make it move -- it will block the light that's reaching the large plant and cause the large plant's center stalk to move slightly.
  • 6 of 14: Also notice the flies swarming around that stalk.
  • 7 of 14: If you go back down to ground level, you can make them move.
  • 8 of 14: Walk until you're as close as you can get to the plant, and there should be a squishy dome-shaped plant in front of you.  (I'm talking about the dome plant close to the second blue plant itself, not the smaller version of the dome plant next to a root.)
  • 9 of 14: Click on the dome plant, and it will release some spores into the air.  If you've moved the fan-shaped plants, the flies should be chased away by those spores.  If the flies don't move, then you may want to move the fan-shaped plants again, just in case you accidentally moved them back to their initial position.
  • 10 of 14: So you now know what it takes to open the first blue plant you saw.
  • 11 of 14: It will open when flies are swarming around it (and they should be if you chased them away from the other blue plant) and when light is shining on it.
  • 12 of 14: Look in the area around the first plant.
  • 13 of 14: Go up the path near the first plant and you should find a blue reflecting plant.  (Take the upward-sloping path to your left as you're facing the first blue plant.)
  • 14 of 14: Point the reflecting plant at the large blue plant, and it should open.  If it doesn't, go back to make sure the flies are no longer around the second plant -- you'll need to try that part of the puzzle again if they're still there.
