Myst III: Exile Hints
How can I open the door with five buttons on it, at the top of the stairs?
of 15: Notice the device that's sitting in front of the door -- it's the key to figuring out the pattern here.
of 15: Look for another similar device in this age.
of 15: From the door, go down the stairs until you reach an intersection and go up at the intersection. Follow that path until you reach the yellow-tipped post -- the matching device is in this area.
of 15: The idea here is to bounce the light from post to post by turning the wheel at the top of each post appropriately.
of 15: If you have trouble aiming the beam, remember that you can walk around the post to get different views -- use these views if necessary to follow the beam's path. Each post can send the light to just one other post, so you don't have any real choices to make here.
of 15: And in some cases, the next post in the sequence may not be the closest one.
of 15: When you've aimed the beam correctly, light should now be shining on the device in front of the door.
of 15: Look at the door again.
of 15: The light's been split into 5 colors, with a different color shining on each of the buttons.
of 15: Those are, coincidently, the same 5 colors that were on the tops of the poles.
of 15: Press the buttons in the same order that the beam followed, starting with the yellow post back near the dome in the water. If you don't remember the order, read ahead. (Some colors may be used more than once.)
of 15: The button at the top is the red one. Going clockwise from there, the other colors are purple, blue, green, and finally, yellow. However, you do need to have the light shining on the door before you can press the buttons -- pressing the correct buttons without the light isn't good enough.
