Myst III: Exile Hints
I've gotten into the tusks, but what do I do once I'm there?
1 of 16: Notice that each of the three rooms in the tusks has a control panel with four circles -- you can move the knobs on each of those panels.
2 of 16: You may have also seen similar sets of knobs on four circles elsewhere.
3 of 16: They're in the wooden tower in the center of the island.
5 of 16: You should be able to look in three viewscreens along the side of the wall -- they doubled as the projectors for Atrus's message.
6 of 16: Also note that there are controls that you can manipulate here.
7 of 16: The handle on the left of the screen zooms the picture in or out, and the handle on the right adjusts the focus.
8 of 16: But you can also aim the camera.
9 of 16: Click on the viewscreen and drag it to move the camera.
10 of 16: Notice the symbols that are etched on each of the screens?
11 of 16: Those same symbols can be found above the doors on each of the tusks.
12 of 16: You need to adjust the camera (position, focus, and zoom level) so that the etched symbol overlaps the drawing on the tusk.
13 of 16: I found it easiest to adjust the focus after setting the zoom and *approximately* setting the position. If the symbols overlap completely, you'll have trouble telling whether the symbol on the tusk is in focus. You may find it easier to get the tusk symbol somewhere on camera but not quite centered -- once you've adjusted the focus, you can center the symbol in your viewscreen.
14 of 16: Also, if the camera appears to get stuck, try changing the zoom level -- this may let you move the camera again.
15 of 16: Take a look at the circles under the screen -- these will tell you where to position the knobs in each of the tusks. It's okay if you're slightly off, so don't worry about being too precise. I found that you could be off by about 1/16th of a circle or so -- e.g., if you think of the circles as compasses and the correct position is halfway between the N and NW marks, you can move the knob precisely to the N or NW position and you're still okay.
