Myst III: Exile Hints
The gear won't stay up when I try to raise it!
1 of 8: That's because the gear above it is already turning.
2 of 8: You need to stop the upper gear first and then raise the gear in this room after that.
3 of 8: Undo what you did to get the upper gear moving.
4 of 8: Go back up to the sluice gate controls to close the gate and thus stop the wheel.
5 of 8: Look in the window in the blue tunnel to retract the flaps on the wheel.
6 of 8: Move the gate back, so that you can go down the ladder next to the locked door.
7 of 8: If you use the crank in that room now, you can raise the gear there.
8 of 8: When you extend the flaps on the water wheel one more time, all of the gears will start spinning at once, powering the door that you want to unlock.
