Myst IV: Revelation Hints
How do I get a Spirit Guide to help me?
of 19: In order to get a guide, you must have visited the Hall of Spirits and spoken to the Protector there.
of 19: The protector will assign a guide, either Fire, Water, or Wind. You could be assigned any one of these.
of 19: The first thing you will need to do is convince the guide to help you. The Protector said you must seek a guide, and be careful to bring the offering that is most pleasing to his senses.
of 19: The three different Spirits each require a unique offering.
of 19: Even when you know what to do, the task of bringing the gift won't be easy! The offering cannot be carried in a traditional "inventory". It must be carried on a hand-cursor until it is either accepted by the Spirit, or until it is destroyed.
of 19: Each of the three Spirits can be found in any of three different locations (with each location being specific to one particular spirit).
of 19: The Fire Spirit will always be found in a ring of stones, with fire in the center.
of 19: The Water Spirit will always be found in a round pool of water.
of 19: The Wind Spirit will always be found on a flat piece of ground, encircled with a few stout stones.
of 19: The Spirit will change its location if you stand immediately in front of it.
of 19: If you see a Spirit from a short ways off, but don't get real close, the Spirit will not move from that location.
of 19: It is helpful to find look for your Spirit Guide before bringing the offering. When you find the Spirit that can be your guide, make sure not to get too close until you can bring the offering -- that way you'll know where to get the offering from, and where to deliver it.
of 19: It isn't as easy as it seems to carry the offering. The offering cannot be carried for more than four moves (four different scene changes).
of 19: Also, the offering will not last very long. You will need to travel immediately back to the appropriate Spirit.
of 19: But you will also need to be careful not to hurry too much, or it will be destroyed.
of 19: You'll need to find the right balance between moving too fast and too slow. One thing to remember is to turn around cautiously, when moving on a single screen. But when you have a path straight ahead of you, and can simply click to move forward, don't delay. If you don't need to turn to either side, that is a good time to move quickly.
of 19: When you have your Spirit in an easy-to-find-again location, you may with to create a saved game -- preferably when you are standing next to the appropriate offering you will use. That way, if you are not successful in bringing your offering to your Spirit Guide, you can simply restore your saved game and try again.
of 19: When you reach a Spirit location with your offering, and the Spirit is in that location, the screen will automatically rotate towards the Spirit. When you are facing the Spirit, click on it with your offering. If you do not complete the task in time, the Spirit will disappear, and you will need to start the entire process over again -- at a different Spirit location.
of 19: When your offering is accepted, a brief cut scene will show a shower of sparks, and clearly identify that you have completed your task. Your Spirit Guide can now help you get to Dream.
