Myst V: End of Ages Hints
How do I solve the puzzle with the seven rocks?
of 10: First, if you haven't found this puzzle, you need to solve the colored-button "maze" in the arena. Once you're through that door, turn right and walk down the beach a bit -- this is the only structure along the shoreline in that direction.
of 10: If you look up, you'll notice that each of the rocks appear to be attached to a pulley, which in turn is attached to a lever.
of 10: And on the other end of the lever, if you walk around this structure to the right, you'll see a couple more rocks in front of a door.
of 10: I bet you want to balance the weights to open that door.
of 10: Go back to the rocks and click on any of the handles to raise or lower the corresponding rock. When the rock is just off the ground, its weight gets added to one side of the balance. Any rock on the ground doesn't get added.
of 10: You want to get the balance just right -- not enough weight means the door into the structure is closed. But too much weight, and you'll end up tipping over the door on the other side of the lever, and that will also keep you from getting up into the structure.
of 10: If it helps any, it appears that out of the seven rocks, they all seem to fall into roughly three sizes -- small, medium, and large.
of 10: Trial and error should get you this puzzle fairly quickly -- keep adding weight until you get too much, then try removing (lowering) weights until things balance. (For example, lower a small rock, and if that doesn't help, lower a medium, and perhaps put back the small rock if you took off too much.)
of 10: For the proper balance, you should raise exactly 4 rocks -- one large, one medium, and two small.
of 10: For example, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th from the left. Many other combinations will also work, but this one should be good enough to solve the puzzle. Then go through the door and climb up to the upper level of this structure.
