Myst V: End of Ages Hints
How I get across the Great Shaft near the second elevator?
of 16: Esher will tell you that you need to raise the floor after you find him at the bottom of the second elevator. If you haven't gotten those instructions yet, you may want to see these hints.
of 16: If you look down in the gap, you may notice that there's another level below you.
of 16: And you can reach that particular level without raising the floor. (In fact, you have to do so.)
of 16: Turn around so you're facing away from the shaft, and you should notice a set of stairs along the outer wall.
of 16: Take either set and follow it all the way to the bottom.
of 16: When you're at the bottom, you may notice a pedestal in the center of the floor.
of 16: It looks like there's something you're supposed to be able to press on the pedestal, but it won't respond when you click on it.
of 16: That's because it needs to get power from somewhere else.
of 16: You probably noticed a pedestal with a blue or yellow button just before you reached the main floor down here. If you missed it, climb up the small set of stairs off the main floor, and stop on the landing just before the longer flights of stairs that take you back up to the elevator.
of 16: Click the button, and the semicircular bar near the pedestal moves over to the other side. You will start to hear it and see it counting down, moving back to its original position.
of 16: Maybe the pedestal back on the main floor will be working now. Try pressing it to see what happens.
of 16: Well, it looks like nothing.
of 16: However, there are two similar pedestals, one on either side of this room -- or at the bottom of either staircase, depending on how you want to look at it.
of 16: Walk over to the other side of the room and press the button on whichever pedestal you haven't already used. (If you're in a real hurry, clicking your mouse without letting go makes you move faster, as does holding down SHIFT. You probably won't need to do this, but the option is there if you need it. But in any case, stay down on the lower level of the shaft, and don't climb up and back down the really big staircases that lead back up to the elevator.)
of 16: Now, if both pedestals are ticking away at the same time, you should see that the pedestal in the center of the room is raised and lit red. If not, try pulling the handles on both pedestals again after they stop, and then repeat this puzzle as quickly as you can.
of 16: Once the pedestal is lit, that means you can press (click on) it. Do so to raise the floor back up to the level above you -- so that you can now cross where the gap used to appear in the floor. That gets you halfway through Esher's request and also opens up the way to another linking book.
