Myst V: End of Ages Hints
Where is the fan that Esher was talking about, and how do I turn it on?
of 16: Esher gave you two tasks in a specific order, so it may help to do those in the same order, by raising the floor and getting across the Great Shaft first.
of 16: When you've gotten across the shaft, there's a single doorway you can enter, about 90 degrees to the left of where the elevator is sitting. Walk through that and look around.
of 16: There's a machine to the right of the doorway (not in the room where the linking book is, but out in its own little hallway).
of 16: There's only a single switch on that machine. Try flipping it, and you should hear something starting to run.
of 16: That's the power for the fan. But where's the fan itself?
of 16: Esher said you needed to turn on the fan so you could reach the lowest levels of the Great Shaft.
of 16: The lowest levels are probably lower than anywhere else you've been before.
of 16: Maybe there's something underneath the floor that you raised.
of 16: You could try going down the stairs once the floor is raised, but you'll see that the exits down into the main room are now blocked.
of 16: There is another way to get under the raised floor, though.
of 16: Think back for a second to what happened when you raised the floor the first time.
of 16: You pressed the button on the pedestal, and then the floor took a few seconds before it started moving.
of 16: You're still allowed to move even when the floor isn't moving.
of 16: That is, you can press the button to raise the floor and then start walking off the part that rises, toward the edges of the room. If the floor is already raised, press the button once to lower it back down, then press the button to raise it, but immediately walk off to the edges of the room this time.
of 16: Wait for the floor in the center to start moving, and you should then see a well below it, which you can now enter by climbing down any of the ladders on its sides.
of 16: There's also a hallway along one side of the well. Walk down that, and you'll find the fan switch at the far end.
