Myst V: End of Ages Hints

What can I do with the red canister that's in a hallway off the arena?

  • 1 of 16: First, if you haven't found the canister, see the following question.
  • 2 of 16: If you take another couple of steps down the hallway, you may notice that there's than just the canister.
  • 3 of 16: There's also a pressure plate at the very end of the hallway.
  • 4 of 16: Try pushing the canister up as far as you can move it, then step onto the pressure plate.
  • 5 of 16: A platform a bit back down the hallway will rise when you do this.  As soon as you step off, though, the platform will fall again, and the canister returns to its initial position.
  • 6 of 16: I bet the platform can take you somewhere else, but you're not going to be able to do this on your own.
  • 7 of 16: Time for a little help from the Bahro.
  • 8 of 16: You could just leave a slate for the Bahro on the pressure plate, but remember that it took a few seconds for the platform to rise all the way.  If the Bahro's just going to teleport itself out as soon as it sees the slate, you might not have enough time to get to wherever it is that you're going.
  • 9 of 16: So you need to find something to draw on the slate that will make the Bahro stay for a few seconds.
  • 10 of 16: The clue will come from outside of this age.
  • 11 of 16: Specifically, from Yeesha's journals back in the Great Shaft.  You can re-read any journal pages that you've already found via the off-white book on the menu at the top of the screen, but if you're missing any journal pages, these hints may help you find them.
  • 12 of 16: One of the pages talks about the Bahro taking time.
  • 13 of 16: To sing, specifically.
  • 14 of 16: Look in the seventh journal (third book on the middle row), and you'll see a symbol with a circle on the left and a stick figure on the right, appearing to lean over.
  • 15 of 16: Draw this symbol on the slate and drop it over the pressure plate.  Then, walk towards the platform and raise the canister as far as it will go.  The Bahro will appear just when you step on the platform, and hopefully, you'll have enough time to get to the floor that's above this one and step off before the platform starts to fall.
  • 16 of 16: Personally, this puzzle gave me a bit of trouble.  The singing symbol seems to be harder to draw than others, and I'm not quite sure why.  If you read Yeesha's journal, you may see that the Bahro has more of a curved back (with a single round line) while if you look at my drawing above, you see that I draw something more angular (where the back is two straight lines).  For some reason, the way I show it is it the only way that worked for me.  Also make sure the arms on the figure are pointed down slightly.

This puzzle is made a little more annoying by the fact that you can't actually hear the Bahro sing over the noise of the machinery (although you may be able to cheat a bit by playing with the different volume levels in the game's control panel).  So if you get this symbol wrong, by the time the platform rises part of the way and comes back down, another Bahro may have already taken your slate back to the start of the age -- and given you lots of busy work to chase it back down.  If you need to, may want to practice this symbol elsewhere and then come back to try the solution for real once you think you can draw it consistently.
