Nancy Drew 1: Secrets Can Kill! (Remastered) Hints

How do I shut off the furnace?

  • 1 of 12: If you came to the maintenance room in response to a mysterious note you got from Daryl at the diner --
  • 2 of 12: -- you'll find that the furnace is overheating dangerously. Since the elevator's call button is now broken, the only exit is on the other side of that furnace, which is about to blow up. Yikes!
  • 3 of 12: The first thing you need to do is get rid of that chain on the controls. If you got the bolt cutters from the kitchen at the diner --
  • 4 of 12: -- use them on the chain. If not, you'll need to unlock that padlock. Don't panic; the combination is in this room, if you can find it in time.
  • 5 of 12: Look on the right wall for a plaque that tells you that the school opened in --
  • 6 of 12: -- 1967. That's the combination.
  • 7 of 12: Okay, the chain is gone. Now all we need to know is how the three gauges should be set. That too is down here; look to the left for a piece of paper tacked to the wall above the tool box showing their settings.
  • 8 of 12: So far so good. Let's grab one of the three levers and -- yeowch, that's hot! Look in the toolbox at the left for some gloves, and let's try again.
  • 9 of 12: According to the paper, you want the first gauge to be at about 7 o'clock, the second to be at about 5 o'clock, and the third to be at about 1 o'clock. The middle one is already where it should be, so leave that one alone and concentrate on the other two.
  • 10 of 12: The levers work a little strangely. When you first come at them, levers 2 and 3 don't seem to work at all; only lever 1 works.
  • 11 of 12: When you've pulled lever 1 two times, lever 3 will now work. But if you pull lever 1 three times, it won't. No idea why this is so, but let's not argue.
  • 12 of 12: So pull lever 1 two times, then pull lever 3 two times. Pull lever 1 one more time, and the settings are right and the furnace shuts down. Phew!
