Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy Hints
How do I open the rolltop desk?
of 14: There's a piece of paper up here in the tower that will get you started on the trek to find the combination. If you're not in the mood for a trek --
of 14: -- that's too bad, because the combination won't work until you find it in the game. So hitch up your pants and let's get started. There's only one other piece of furniture in the room you can interact with; the paper you need is in there.
of 14: Stand in the window and look to your right to see a small end table. Open the drawer to find the paper -- a list of books. So what?
of 14: Let's go to the library and see if we can find the books; maybe one of them has a key in it or something.
of 14: All the books are here -- one on the left shelves, two on the right shelves, and one on the desk next to the weights -- so we're on the right track. There's no key, but there are handwritten notes on the inside cover of each book. What can we make of that?
of 14: Each note is a sort of a riddle that refers to a number in some way, and I'll tell you up front that each riddle will give you a letter. Let's see if we can translate the riddles and see what we get.
of 14: So what does all that nonsense give us? 1, C; 2, Q; 3, L; and 4, X. That's CQLX, all of which are letters included in the combination on the desk. But what do we do for the last letter of the combination? (You might think you can take a shortcut here by just entering the first four and then trying all the letters till you get the right one, but that doesn't work; you have to actually find the last letter.)
of 14: There was something else on that paper from the tower beside book names, did you notice?
of 14: There's a drawing of a rock, next to a drawing of the fairy circle you may have come across in the gardens.
of 14: Go to the fairy circle, then turn right and fly along the cliffs to the right. You can't just fly out to sea, or the jetpack will run out of fuel and you'll crash. But you can fly just on the other side of the cliffs as long as you like.
of 14: When you get about to the garden, you'll see some large rocks out in the water. Fly out to them to discover that they look just like the drawing! Click on the one with the blue outline to land.
of 14: Here you see something carved into the rock: "N5" is all it says. But that's all we need.
of 14: So now you know that the combination to the desk is --
of 14: CQLXN. But remember, this won't work until you've looked at all the books and flown out to the island.
