Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy Hints

How do I win at darts?

  • 1 of 10: Playing darts is actually not that hard; you just put a token in the slot (and there's one in the coin return slot), pick up the darts, and start throwing. WINNING the darts game, now that's another story.
  • 2 of 10: Either Nancy has an advanced case of Parkinson's disease, or Her Interactive is just trying to make the game harder. Either way, the dart weaves, wobbles, shakes, and travels all over the board, with the result that you never know exactly where your dart is going to go. Actually, that is kind of what darts is like in real life, isn't it?
  • 3 of 10: The way that you win the game is by hitting spots to add up to 201 exactly. The red dot at the center is the bullseye; that's worth 50 points. The green circle around the bullseye is worth 25 points.
  • 4 of 10: The other pieces of the pie are worth what they say they are, if you hit them in the black or white part. If you hit them in the green or red ring closest to the number, it's worth twice what it says; if you hit the green or red bit closest to the center, it's worth three times what it says. So, for example, the outer ring of the 20 bit is worth 40, and the inner ring is worth 60.
  • 5 of 10: So what you're trying to do here is control where the darts go. The first couple can go anywhere, but the higher numbers are better.
  • 6 of 10: Watch your score on the right. When you get closer to zero, you need to be more careful about where the dart goes. If your total is 47, for example, you don't want to get a bullseye, since 50 more points would put you at -3, and you just lost.
  • 7 of 10: So the game of darts is really a combination of hand-eye coordination and basic math skills. A good game might go like this: 25, 50, 20, 26 (13x2), 25, 36 (18x2), 19 -- which adds up to exactly 201, and you win!
  • 8 of 10: As for the wobbling and shaking, the only way I've found to combat it is to hold the dart somewhere in the vicinity of the area you want to hit, then just wait for the dart to slow down, which it does sometimes. If it comes to a stop and you're anywhere near where you want to go, give it a toss and see what happens.
  • 9 of 10: Also, you can do this without going broke if you start a dart game, then save before you throw any darts. If you mess up, restore your saved game and try again.
  • 10 of 10: The first time you win at darts, you'll get a doll that you need for the second dollhouse puzzle in the nursery. After that, winning will get you two tokens.
