Nancy Drew 27: The Deadly Device Hints

How do I get past the fingerprint scanner?

  • 1 of 14: The scanner is set to read Niko's fingerprint, which is a bit problematic, him being dead and all. But there is a way around it.
  • 2 of 14: Did you notice the book on biometrics in Mason's cubicle? That's the place to start.
  • 3 of 14: But it's a little confusing; read to the end of this hint, and I'll give you complete instructions.
  • 4 of 14: Basically, you need two things: a sample of Niko's fingerprint --
  • 5 of 14: -- and some gummy bears.
  • 6 of 14: Okay, now we're ready to start. The first thing is to turn that fingerprint into a fingerprint mold rather than just a flat depiction of a print.
  • 7 of 14: The way to do this is to use the same machine you used to turn a circuit diagram into a circuit board --
  • 8 of 14: -- that is, the photolithography machine. Use the same process you used for the circuit board, except you don't have to use the computer first.
  • 9 of 14: Now we need to melt the gummy bears. You can do this in the employee lounge.
  • 10 of 14: There's a hotplate, a small portable heating element, on the kitchen counter. You can pick up the power knob for it from Security, just left of the keycard reader.
  • 11 of 14: You also need a heatproof container to melt the gummies. There's a glass beaker on the left table in the middle of the lab.
  • 12 of 14: When you have all the items, zoom in on the hotplate and Nancy will place the fingerprint wafer on the left. Put the beaker on the hotplate, put the gummies in it, and turn on the hotplate.
  • 13 of 14: When the gummies are melted, pick up the beaker (ouch! man, I want an oven mitt) and pour them on the wafer. Voila! Prosthetic fingerprint.
  • 14 of 14: In real life, I don't know if this would work. I've heard that fingerprint scanners also measure the minute electrostatic charge of a living finger, and they reject it if it's not there. But what the heck; it works in this game, and besides we got to annoy Victor.
