Nancy Drew: The Creature of Kapu Cave Hints
How do I find out what flavor of shave ice Mike likes?
of 12: Okay, so we have to guess, and we have to pay a BI buck for each guess. (What a fun guy. Remind me to go to Maine for my next vacation.) Read to the end of this hint to find out what flavor he likes.
of 12: Go to the shave ice cart (from the door of the office, turn right, go forward twice, and turn left) and see what we've got. (Incidentally, this might be another good place to save your game; that way, after experimenting to find out the right flavor, you can restore, give him the right flavor the first time, and save yourself a little money.)
of 12: There are nine different flavors, and a little experimentation will show you that you can put three flavors on each time. So pick any three flavors that appeal to you, then take it to Mike and see what he says.
of 12: He'll tell you how many of those flavors are right, but not which ones. You then need to figure out which ones you got right, if any.
of 12: There are several ways to do this. One way is to give him nine shave ices, putting on only one flavor each time: the first with three watermelons, the second with three lemons, and so on. Keep track of which three flavors get a positive response (he'll say that you only got one out of three right on those ones), then combine them. This is kind of expensive in BI bucks, but it'll definitely tell you what you need to know.
of 12: Another way is to do any three flavors and keep track of what he says. When you get one that's all wrong, you know you can leave those ones off the list completely. This can take a long time and be very frustrating, especially if (like me) you forget to write down the results every time.
of 12: I'll give you a major hint here and tell you that you need one flavor from each row. Can you figure out how to work it now?
of 12: Give Mike a shave ice with the first flavor from the first row, the first flavor from the second row, and the first flavor from the third row. Write down the results, then repeat with the second flavors and the third flavors.
of 12: You now know that you need none of the first flavors, one of the second flavors and two of the third flavors. Keep experimenting to narrow it down further, until finally --
of 12: Is this all too much work? I agree. Here are the flavors you need:
