Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake Hints

How do I make those stairs appear next to the tombstone?

  • 1 of 14: Have you unlocked the tombstone with the key?
  • 2 of 14: That's odd.  The key turns in the lock, but nothing seems to happen.  Vivian said stairs would appear.  Have you called her back to ask her about this?
  • 3 of 14: Vivian remembers now -- she tells you the key unlocks rotating blocks of letters in the tombstone.  She remembers that the letters need to be rotated so that they spell "BALDO".  This will make the stairs appear.
  • 4 of 14: Return to the tombstone and unlock it again.  Examine it carefully and experiment with it.  What do you see?
  • 5 of 14: You may have noticed that each letter of the "WALDO" inscription is actually a set of rotating blocks displaying one letter at a time.  Touching a rotating block causes it, and usually other rotating blocks, to advance once each displaying a different letter.
  • 6 of 14: You need to know more about what the rotating blocks are capable of displaying.
  • 7 of 14: It might help to work this puzzle out on paper.  Write down the letters that can be displayed by each rotating block, in the order that they appear around the block.  You should also record which other blocks rotate when you rotate each block.  (This puzzle is different for Junior Detectives than for Senior Detectives, so the hints are split in that way.)
  • 8 of 14: Examine the top diagram carefully, circling the letters you start with and the letters you wish to end with, and determine the number of times each block needs to rotate in order to reach that letter.
  • 9 of 14: Examine the bottom diagram carefully and look at the rows, noting which blocks affect the most letters and which blocks affect the least letters.  You may want to start by rotating the block that affect the most letters, then work towards rotating the block that affects the least letters.  That way you don't finish by rotating a block that messes all the other blocks up.
  • 10 of 14: Examine the bottom diagram carefully again and look at the columns, noting which letters are affected by the least blocks and which letters are affected by the most blocks.  You may want to start by rotating the block that is not affected by any other block, then work towards rotating the block affected only by blocks you have already set.  Again, that way you minimize rotating a block that messes other blocks up.
  • 11 of 14: The key to solving this is to determine the correct order to set the blocks.
  • 12 of 14: Before you get stated, you must have a goal in mind.  Fortunately, Vivian has told you what to spell on the tombstone.  The letters need to be rotated so that they spell "BALDO".
  • 13 of 14: Now, solve the puzzle through logic, reason, and determination.
  • 14 of 14: Solving the tombstone puzzle causes the stairs to appear next to the tombstone.
