In return for the research he did for you and to "make amends", Jeff asks you to sort envelopes of newspaper articles. He is referring to a wooden box in the ranger station containing the envelopes, each with a year labeled on it. Since the dates are written using Roman numerals, it will be a little challenging to read the dates.
