How do I determine the value on the left pillar?

  • 1 of 4: So, since the number at the bottom of the left pillar has two lines and two dots, we can convert that as follows: 2 lines X 5 (the value for each line) is ten; and 2 dots X 1 (the value for each dot) is two.  Add together the ten and the two and the value is 12.  Remember that number -- but we're not done yet.
  • 2 of 4: The second digit, in the middle of the left pillar, is the "twenties" place.  There are two dots here -- and each is worth one -- so to determine the value of this digit, you will need to multiply 2 X 20 (the value of the digit), to arrive at 40.  Also remember this number, but we're still not done.
  • 3 of 4: The third digit, at the top of the left pillar, is the "four hundreds" place.  There are three dots here -- and each is worth one -- so to determine the value of this digit, you will need to multiply 3 X 400 (the value of the digit) to arrive at 1200.
  • 4 of 4: Now, to determine the total value of the number, all that remains is to add up the value of each digit: 12 + 40 + 1200 = 1252.  The number on the left column equals 1252.
