How do I determine the value on the right pillar?
of 4: So, since the number at the bottom of the right pillar has two lines and two dots, we can convert that as follows: 2 lines X 5 (the value for each line) is ten; and 2 dots X 1 (the value for each dot) is two. Add together the ten and the two and the value is 12. Remember that number -- but we're not done yet.
of 4: The second digit, in the middle of the right pillar, is the "twenties" place. There are two dots here and three lines. The first step is to convert that into more modern terms by multiplying out the value of each symbol and adding all values together. 3 lines X 5 (value of each line) = 15; 2 dots X 1 (the value for each dot) = 2; 15 (value of lines + 2 (value of dots) = 17 (value for this symbol). But we're not done with this digit yet. This digit is in the "twenties" place -- which means it will need to be multiplied by 20. 17 X 20 = 340. Remember this number, as well -- but we're still not done.
of 4: The third digit, at the top of the right pillar, is the "four hundreds" place. There is one dot here -- which is worth one -- so to determine the value of this digit, you will need to multiply 1 X 400 (the value of the digit) to arrive at 400.
of 4: Now, to determine the total value of the number, all that remains is to add up the value of each digit: 12 + 340 + 400 = 752. The number on the right column equals 752.
