Nine: The Last Resort Hints

Top Part (Addition Tables)

  • 1 of 20: There are several totem poles with notation boxes (those half-shaded squares) depicted on the top part of this sheet.
  • 2 of 20: These look just like the totems you saw on the organ sheet music in the Lobby (that you played for the Tiki gods).
  • 3 of 20: In the vertical column, the first two totems added together "equal" the third totem (note the big "plus" sign).
  • 4 of 20: In the horizontal row on top of the page, all three totems are different (they do not add together horizontally).
  • 5 of 20: The little arrows in three boxed areas underneath or across from the totems correspond to each respective notation (half-shaded) box.
  • 6 of 20: For example, a notation square with the bottom half shaded might correspond to "5 back arrows, 2 back arrows, 5 forward arrows."
  • 7 of 20: Each new game assigns different "moves" to each notation box, so the solution to cracking this code will change from game to game.
  • 8 of 20: Each notation box is always equal to 3 "moves."
  • 9 of 20: In order to decipher what all of the notation boxes indicate (that is, which three "moves" correspond to each box), you must complete the two addition tables on the page.
  • 10 of 20: The addition chart on the left side of the page can be superimposed on top of the addition chart on the right side of the page.
  • 11 of 20: That is, the same 3 totems are on both vertical sides, and the same 3 totems are on both horizontal sides.  The chart is just separated into two parts to make it clear what each of the two sets of notation boxes represent.
  • 12 of 20: When you superimpose the two tables, you will be able to fill in the missing values of the combined chart using simple arithmetic and hints from some previous notation sheets you have seen.  Since each game is different, there is no one solution for this puzzle!  Sorry.
  • 13 of 20: The additional notation sheets that will provide some of the missing values are found (answers below):
  • 14 of 20: 1. On the pipe organ in the lobby (Tiki god music).
  • 15 of 20: 2. Under the marble board in the second floor hallway.
  • 16 of 20: 3. Inside the race car in the Race Car room (where you are now!)
  • 17 of 20: 4. In the middle drawer of the desk in the Jester and Unicorn alcove in Aura's room.
  • 18 of 20: When you are done completing the combined addition table, using information from this notation sheet and the other sheets mentioned above, you should have deciphered the three "moves" for SIX of the notation boxes (the three across the top, and the three in the column.)
  • 19 of 20: Don't worry if there are a couple more ways to shade boxes that are not covered here; you do not need to know "every possible" notation box to successfully complete the game.
  • 20 of 20: In fact, only these six boxes are used in Nine, the other two (of eight total possibilities) are not.
