Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints

Once I free the Knower, what all True Names should I buy from her?

  • 1 of 10: That depends a great deal on how much gold you have with you.
  • 2 of 10: Fortunately, the only True Name you *have* to have is the Reaper's, and she just takes the sensei's amulet and the puzzle ring in exchange for that. It may be a bit disappointing to lose the amulet, but the game's almost over, anyway.
  • 3 of 10: All of the other True Names are optional, and some are more useful (and therefore more expensive) than others.
  • 4 of 10: For instance, if you learn Gru'ul the Quarry Boss' True Name, you can do various fun things to him when you return to the City of Lost Souls, like compelling him to do only good from now on, and to give the quarry workers a holiday. (NOTE: If you're an evil character, you can trade a henchman's True Name for a powerful evil-aligned bracer that Gru'ul has, or use his True Name to get the bracer for free.)
  • 5 of 10: If you didn't kill Arden Swift earlier, buy his True Name so you can force him to hand over all of his winnings, start a fight with the dragon tavernkeeper, or write an epic song about you.
  • 6 of 10: Another useful one is the Sleeping Man's true love. If you learn her True Name, you can report it to the Sleeping Man when you return to the temple to get some bonus XP. (Note that there are several possibilities for who Sleepy's true love is, including Sensei Dharvana, who may be dead because of you. If so, pointing her corpse out to him will cause him to attack you. On the other hand, if his true love is one of your henchwomen, he'll join you for the final battle with Mephistopheles. You can get different answers for this by saving right before you free the Knower of Names, and restoring and trying again it isn't Aribeth or Nathyrra.)
  • 7 of 10: And hey, it would sure be *sweet* to know Mephistopheles' True Name so you could make that hideous old archdevil dance like a puppet on strings! Oh, yeah!
  • 8 of 10: If you don't buy Mephistopheles' name, you'd better buy the names of the henchmen that you plan to fight him with unless your Persuade or Intimidate skill is way high. Trust me on this one.
  • 9 of 10: If you run out of money, you can always call up the djinni merchant and sell a bunch of stuff to him. Note, however, that he's a bit of a cheapskate (his "sell cap" is a mere $15,000), and you may have trouble with the "djinni attack glitch." However, he's your last chance to raise some money for buying True Names with, since you can't return to the battlefield area after going back to the City of Lost Souls.
  • 10 of 10: One final note is that you get XP (usually 500 or 1,000) for every True Name that you buy. If you're fairly close to a level-up, you may want to buy as many True Names as you can just for the XP. (Mephie's True Name gets you the most XP, especially if you use it against him in Waterdeep.)
