Descent into Undermountain

  • 1 of 15: This quest begins when the drow show up and attack the inn, which happens while you're talking to Durnan.
  • 2 of 15: They'll make things difficult by casting darkness spells, but you can always pick out the baddies by using the TAB key and searching for red blips.
  • 3 of 15: Once all the drow in the main room are down, head through the door that leads to the well room and finish off the rest of the drow contingent.
  • 4 of 15: After the drow are dead, a beholder attacks and the four henchmen from Neverwinter foolishly rush down the well after it. There's nothing you can do to stop any of that, so talk to Durnan afterwards to find out what to do next.
  • 5 of 15: You can follow Tomi and company down the well right away, but it's a much better idea to explore around the inn and Waterdeep first in order to find henchmen and equipment.
  • 6 of 15: Deekin, the kobold bard from Shadows of Undrentide, will show up and be ready to join you as soon as you finish talking to Durnan. Also, White Thesta will appear in the well room and be available there for free healing and store services. (This makes the well room a very good spot to set a teleport destination with the Relic of the Reaper.)
  • 7 of 15: NOTE: White Thesta gives you a Rod of Resurrection for free in order to help you resurrect those four hotheads who ran blindly down the well after the beholder. Even if you have no intention of ever making any of them into regular henchmen, you should still keep the rod long enough to resurrect them (unless you can cast a spell that does the same thing) so you can get some XP and their equipment.
  • 8 of 15: When you're ready to get going in the Undermountain, use the well to get there.
  • 9 of 15: You'll start out in the entry chamber, and you will have to deal with a cowardly little goblin before you can find the exit to level 1 of the Undermountain.
  • 10 of 15: NOTE: Whenever your journal for this quest is updated from now on, you can return to the inn and report your progress to Durnan. After you do, you may be able to persuade him to reward you. This happens when Grovel tells you of Halaster's disappearance, when Berger (level 2 central) tells you Halaster's been captured by the drow, and when Nathyrra (level 3 central) tells you about the Valsharess. Each reward is $3,000 plus $1,000 more for each level your character has!
  • 11 of 15: There's lots of optional treasure and combat to be had in the three sections of level 1, but all you really need to do is figure out how to get to level 2.
  • 12 of 15: Level 2 presents a similar situation, with your goal being to get to level 3.
  • 13 of 15: On level 3, your goal is to free the mage Halaster from drow control.
  • 14 of 15: Once he's free and you've made any last-minute trips to Waterdeep and the inn, talk to Halaster to learn a few things about the nutball and to finish up Chapter 1.
  • 15 of 15: NOTE: Halaster will only let Deekin go with you to Chapter 2, so before you talk to him, go through the inventories of Tomi, Sharwyn, Daelan, and Linu to see if there's anything you want to take with you. Also, since you'll never see those four again, you might as well sell off all their stuff. (If you forget to do this until Chapter 2 starts, you'll have to buy the items you want from the Pool of Lost Souls in the Reaper's realm.)
