What good is the ancient mechanism near the locked door?
1 of 5: Have you tried raising and lowering it?
2 of 5: It's a magical device, so it naturally won't do anything interesting until you get rid of the anti-magic field.
3 of 5: Try it after the anti-magic field is dropped to get a list of options.
4 of 5: To use the device to cast spells, you'll have to have a sufficiently high Spellcraft or Lore skill. (Note that you can drink potions to increase Lore and/or wear items to increase both skills.)
5 of 5: UPDATE: During my last two playthrus, the ancient mechanism actually worked when the anti-magic field was still in place. I don't know if that's character-specific or has something to do with my having recently installed the v1.62 game patch.
