Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide Hints

How can this guy get out of being executed?

  • 1 of 6: This is a fairly common riddle -- one that you may have even seen in a recent game like Morrowind, in the second riddle in the Mount Kand Cavern, for example. If you've seen this riddle anywhere else, the same answer applies here.
  • 2 of 6: Otherwise, think about it. The prisoner can make one statement, and the people he's talking to will base his form of execution on whether they think the statement is true or not. If it's true, he'll be drowned; if it's a lie, he'll be hanged.
  • 3 of 6: To save his life, the guy would need to make a statement that sets up a logical paradox.
  • 4 of 6: What if he said "I will be hanged?" If that were taken as true, he'd have to be drowned because he was told that he'd be drowned for a true statement. But if he were drowned, that would make his statement false, which would demand hanging. Paradox!
  • 5 of 6: If it were taken as a lie, he'd need to be hanged since he was told that a lie would result in hanging. But if he were hanged, that would make his statement true. Another paradox!
  • 6 of 6: So choose the "I will be hanged" choice to answer the second riddle correctly.
