How can I kill Rumgut with a non-super character?
1 of 4: If you're a fairly tough and well-armored fighter-type character with lots of healing potions and kits, you could stand right near the cave exit and trade blows with Rumgut until you're nearly out of health. Quickly exit the cave and use your potions and kits to get back to full health, then reenter and resume the battle.
2 of 4: Another way is to try standing in the corner near the two piles of wood that are lying on the floor near the big cookfire and using ranged attacks on Rumgut. If he's on the other side of the cookfire and your henchman is standing right in front of him, he may be unable to reach you even after your henchman goes down. This method often fails, though, so be sure to save your game before trying it. (Also be sure to have plenty of spare arrows.)
3 of 4: An easier way to shoot Rumgut safely is to get put into his cage. Once inside, go stand near the interactive rocks that lead to the tunnel exit and shoot him through the bars from there. Even after he bashes the cage door to pieces, he should get stuck outside the cage to where he can't reach you. (Note that this often fails if your henchman is inside the cage with you, so you might want to drop him off somewhere before you get put into the cage -- you don't need his help with this strategy, anyway.)
4 of 4: If nothing else works, you might want to return to Rumgut's cave right before you're ready to leave Chapter 1 and try again. The only disadvantage of this is that you can't get back into Rumgut's cage after you rescue Becka, so that way of fighting him won't be available to you (unless you put off her rescue until the very end, too).
