Neverwinter Nights Hints
Combat Tips
of 11: Unless you're looking for a real challenge, you should always play through the game on Normal difficulty (which is the default setting) and with a henchman with you at all times. Gameplay was carefully balanced to give a not-too-hard-and-not-too-easy gameplay experience in this way.
of 11: In general, the best kind of henchman to hire when you have a choice is one that's of a very different type from your main character. That way, you'll get the benefit of a whole different set of skills. For instance, fighters and barbarians would greatly benefit from the company of a cleric or sorcerer. (Then again, there are some areas where another tough hack-n-slash guy to cover your back would be most helpful.)
of 11: It's a good idea to save items you find in treasure that can protect you against certain spell effects or forms of attack, even if those items aren't ones you'd normally wear. For instance, the Archer's Belts, Brawler's Belts, and Swordsman's Belts each protect against a different type of physical damage. Even if you normally wear a belt that enhances your Strength, you should keep those other belts handy for fights against very powerful monsters that give you a lot of trouble. You could wear a Swordsman's Belt to help protect against the slashing attacks of a powerful dragon's claws, for example. (Note that there are "Greater" version of these belts that are the best to use, and that can be bought from Durga in Chapter 1.)
of 11: If you're having a really hard time getting past a certain combat or series of combats, here's a list of things to try.
of 11: Also remember that you can use the Stone of Recall in the middle of a battle. You can teleport out, relax and heal at the temple, and then either pay to teleport right back into combat, or go the long way on foot for free. One catch to this is that you don't always instantly vanish when you use the Stone of Recall, so don't wait until your character is surrounded and has only 1 hit point to use it, or he might be killed before he can teleport away.
of 11: One vital hit-point-restoring tip that you mustn't overlook is resting. You can almost always rest and fully heal anywhere as long as there are no enemies right nearby (or if there are some nearby, but they're behind a door you haven't opened yet). This fact makes having a lot of healing potions and spells in stock unnecessary -- just have a few handy for when you need to restore HP in the middle of battle.
of 11: Another strategy that's good for large rooms full of monsters is to get them to follow you down narrow corridors. This will help to ensure that no more than one or two of them are beating on you at once.
of 11: When drawing monsters off a few at a time from a large group, it can be handy to position your henchman where you're going to draw the monsters to and order him to stand his ground there and use ranged attacks.
of 11: There are many situations where it's possible to shoot monsters through bars or from up high where they can't reach you. Always be on the lookout for this kind of situation, especially in dungeons that take great pride in having lots of barred doorways.
of 11: Bridges in many dungeons can also be used to your advantage. If a monster is chasing you, but isn't right on your heels, try running across a nearby bridge. If you do it fast enough and stop near the other end of the bridge, the monster may get stuck on the other side, making it easy for you to finish him off with arrows or spells.
of 11: If you have the ability to summon up an animal companion, all you have to do to heal your companion is talk to him outside of combat and choose to feed him. If your companion gets killed and you can't summon him again right away, find somewhere safe to rest.
