Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer Hints

How does the new crafting system work?

  • 1 of 10: To get some basic info on it, read the Crafting section in the manual and the in-game descriptions of the Enchanter's Satchel and Shaper's Alembic items that start out in Safiya's inventory.
  • 2 of 10: Unless your character is a high-level imported wizard, or something like that, you'll probably need to have a companion do all your crafting for you.
  • 3 of 10: That'll mean that all the really good enchantments are way out of reach, at least for most of the game, since they require a very high-level character (level 30 for the very best stuff). Also, many of them require essences (such as pristine spirit essences) that are a whole lot of trouble to get.
  • 4 of 10: Due to this, I recommend you forget about the big-time enchantments, and only use the new crafting system for simple enchantments, which you can learn about by reading the in-game descriptions of brilliant and pristine essence items. They can make your equipment more effective, and can greatly increase the value of stuff that you're going to sell.
  • 5 of 10: Safiya is probably the best one to do most of your crafting once she's level 18, since she starts the game with both of the necessary feats and some of the necessary spells. As for the other crafting spells, see below for a complete list of them.
  • 6 of 10: I say to wait until she's level 18 because she can then enchant items using three brilliant essences, which is enough to add some pretty good attributes. If you have the patience to wait until she's level 21, she'll be able to enchant items with up to four brilliant essences, giving them even more powerful (and valuable) attributes.
  • 7 of 10: Also, when you're leveling up Gann and Kaelyn, watch for your first opportunity to give them the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat. It'll be handy to have them able to enchant your armor and weapons, too. (You might also want to give them the Craft Wondrous Item feat so they can add magical properties to belts, helms, etc.)
  • 8 of 10: Starting in Act I, Part 3, you can go to Shadow Mulsantir and fight an endless number of creatures by repeatedly trying to rest outdoors or inside the Death God's Vault. This will get you *lots* of essences that you can use to enchant items. In fact, there's no limit to how many essences you can get (except your patience).
  • 9 of 10: All of the above applies to earth, water, fire, air, and power essences. Spirit essences are special, and can only be gotten by using spirit feats on certain types of enemies starting in Act II. Also, only your main character can use spirit essences to enchant items, and only after he gets the spirit crafting feats. (Thankfully, he doesn't need any of the standard item-crafting feats or skills.)
  • 10 of 10: Besides the standard crafting recipes (which you can get from the in-game essence descriptions) and the unique essence crafting (which I describe in the hints for the areas where you get those essences), there are a few advanced crafting options for weapons.
