The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

What if I agree to help him?

  • 1 of 17: He'll ask you to be on the street near his house at 6 am, when Bernadette Peneles will come out of her house.
  • 2 of 17: You could spend all day following her around as Glarthir asked you to, but that's tedious and unnecessary.
  • 3 of 17: In case you haven't figured it out yet, Glarthir is just being paranoid about these people. They really have no interest in him, and certainly aren't spying on him.
  • 4 of 17: If you ask Peneles or another townsperson about Glarthir, they'll say that he's very strange, and is tolerated as the town eccentric.
  • 5 of 17: If you talk to a guard, you'll be able to report that Glarthir thinks there's a plot against him.
  • 6 of 17: NOTE: Dion, the captain of the guards, may at some point approach you about Glarthir if you've been asking around about him. He'll basically warn you that Glarthir is a real nut, and will advise you to report his actions to the guards.
  • 7 of 17: In any case, meet Glarthir in the usual spot at midnight and report on Peneles, whether you followed her or not.
  • 8 of 17: Whether or not you say Peneles really is spying on him will have a small effect on how it all turns out, but not much of one. Say that she either is or isn't spying on him to get some gold.
  • 9 of 17: He'll then ask you to spy on Toutius Sextius, which you can either do or not do, just as with Peneles.
  • 10 of 17: After you report on Sextius, he'll ask you to spy on Davide Surilie.
  • 11 of 17: When you report on Surilie, things will come to a head.
  • 12 of 17: If you reported that all three people weren't spying on Glarthir, he'll assume you're their fellow spy, and will attack you. You'll have to kill him, which will end the quest.
  • 13 of 17: If you reported that one or more of the people were spies, Glarthir will give you a "List of Death" and promise you lots of gold for killing all the people on the list. (The list will include everyone you reported as a spy.)
  • 14 of 17: The most obvious thing to do at this point is tell a guard. Talk to him about Glarthir, say that he should be arrested, and then show him the "List of Death." This will get the guard to go after Glarthir and kill him.
  • 15 of 17: Another thing you could do is talk to Glarthir again and refuse to kill anyone for him. This will get him to do what he would have done if you'd refused to help him in the first place.
  • 16 of 17: Or you could warn the people who are on the list. Peneles and Sextius will just advise you to tell the guards, but Surilie will decide to take Glarthir down with the help of his brother Gaston.
  • 17 of 17: Or you could actually do what Glarthir wants you to do, either using the Frenzy spell (see the Spellmaking Tips) on your intended victims to keep from getting a bounty for attacking them, or killing them where no one else can see and then paying the 40-gold bounty for assault. After you get them all, report to Glarthir at the usual place and time to get your 1,000 gold.
