The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Merchant Info
of 11: Unfortunately, there are no super merchants in this game like the Creeper and Mudcrab merchant in Morrowind.
of 11: The richest merchant in this game has only 1500 gold, and he's a high-level Thieves Guild fence with a Mercantile skill of 100.
of 11: The next-richest merchants have 1200 gold, but most of them have Mercantile skills of 80.
of 11: The one exception is Varel Morvayn in "Morvayn's Peacemakers" in Anvil, who has 1200 gold and a Mercantile skill of only 40.
of 11: Daenlin in "The Archer Paradox" in Bravil is close, with 1000 gold and a Mercantile skill of 40.
of 11: Sinderion in the cellar of Skingrad's West Weald Inn only has 400 gold, but his Mercantile skill is a pathetic 8, so you can really haggle for good prices with him.
of 11: M'raaj-Dar in the Dark Brotherhood's Cheydinhal sanctuary is similar, with 400 gold and a Mercantile of 6.
of 11: If you've got the Shivering Isles expansion installed, you can go to New Sheoth's Crucible district to find two merchants (Earil and Ahjazda) who have 1000 gold and a Mercantile skill of 6.
of 11: If you've got the "Vile Lair" DLC module installed, there'll be a merchant in the Wawnet Inn (location 20 on the Heartlands map) with 2000 gold and a Mercantile skill of 44. He's the best one to sell really valuable things to, like ebony and Daedric gear.
of 11: See the Spellmaking Tips to learn how to create a good combo Charm and Fortify Mercantile spell that'll help you a lot with any merchant. It'll not only let you set the "haggle" settings much higher than normal, but you'll also be able to invest 500 gold in most shops, which lets you get more money for high-dollar items (see next hint).
of 11: If you're selling high-dollar stuff (worth about 2000 gold or more), go to whoever has the most gold no matter what his Mercantile skill is. Even though you can't set his "haggle" setting as high as you could with a lower-Mercantile merchant, you can still get more gold for your valuable items. A good rule to use is this: If the merchant with the most gold will pay you more than the next-highest-gold merchant would, sell it to him. (And then move on down the line for other items.)
